Chapter Ten

WITHIN AN HOUR, MY sugar rose to its appropriate level, but my energy took a nosedive. By the time Joseph and I finished our meal, I had sunk to a state of exhaustion. I could no longer keep my eyes open, and I slouched into the cushion of the couch. Playing host was no longer in the cards.

“All right,” Joseph stated soundly. “I’m outta here. It’s obvious I’m boring you.”

My head felt like a two-ton boulder, but I managed to open my eyes. “You’re not boring me. I’m just sleepy.”

I felt his hand on my knee, and my breath caught. “Don’t think you’re getting out of going out with me so easily. Clearly tonight is not the night, but I’m holding you to it, you hear me?”

“I hear you,” I said, smiling from ear to ear.

“Tomorrow is Sunday, and I have plans, so I can’t do it then. How about next weekend? You free?”

I had absolutely no idea what I was doing next weekend, but I was darn sure I could move things around if I had plans. No way was I going to let this opportunity slip through my fingers. And not because I wanted to suddenly pursue him. Undoubtedly, we were two different people who wanted different things in life. I enjoyed his friendship, the conversations, and the company—nothing more.

“Next weekend sounds great. Should I knock?” I jested.

“No, we’re passed that now. I’ll pick you up at seven on Friday.”

I repeated the time and date in my head. Between Joseph’s hand still on my knee and the fogginess of fatigue, I made a serious mental note not to forget. “Got it.”

I felt him stir on the couch and lifted my eyelids just enough to catch Joseph reaching for the blanket on the nearby chair. He spread the afghan over me and winked. “Sleep tight, Sutherland.”

The synapses in my brain were no longer firing at optimum speed, but I could tell by the tone of his voice that he didn’t really want to leave. Knowing what I’d heard between him and Caroline this evening, I worried he would go off and do something stupid again, like drink himself to death.

“Are you okay?” I asked as he approached the door.

He glanced over his shoulder for a brief moment then turned around to face me. “Yeah,” he said with a pleasant smile on his face. “I’m good.”

He stood there gazing at me, his thumbs finding a home in his front pockets. If I could have taken a picture of Joseph, it would have been right now, second only to the moment when he had donned the towel. I loved the casual poise of his character, the squared confidence in his shoulders contradicting the laxity of his grin.

“This very well could have been the second worse day of my life,” he explained, looking down at his feet for a second. He took a deep breath, as if fighting off an emotion he likely wanted to keep buried, before he raised his head with conviction.
